About Us

Our Mission:

To educate consumers about the toxins in conventional home furnishings, to promote awareness of organic and natural alternatives and to make  those organic and earth-friendly products available to the consumer.

Hi there! I'm delighted that you found my website and that you wanted to learn a little bit about the people behind the company.

I'm Samantha Mayfield, owner and founder of Harmony Bedding. I created this company with the goal of helping to make a positive change in people's lives.

I hope to do this by educating them of the benefits of natural and organic bedding, and by making those products available through my store. Most of us spend a third of our lives in bed, and if we're breathing toxic fumes from flame retardants or VOC's during that third of our life, how healthy can that be?

While this page is about me, it's also about Harmony Bedding and why I created it. Most people think nothing of it, but most of the 'conventional' sleep/bedding products we buy and use today are saturated with toxic chemicals, which I believe may contribute to many health problems.

I myself used to use them and thought nothing of it. That is, until I started doing some research. I've always been passionate about the environment - I've always recycled paper, plastic and glass, and I use natural and compact fluorescent lighting throughout my home.

I could go on and on about my green lifestyle, but I'll save that for my blog. Suffice it to say I do all I can to live a healthy, natural and eco-friendly lifestyle. Now back to the subject of organic and natural sleep products.

Research has discovered that the flame retardants used on all conventional mattresses contains known carcinogens, and memory foam emits VOC's - volatile organic compounds, which can be harmful to your health. Dust mites and various molds can also inhabit your bedding, causing or worsening allergy symptoms. (that explains why my 'seasonal' allergies lingered year-round!)

I myself used a memory foam mattress for years, due to my scoliosis - memory foam was the only thing supportive enough to relieve my back pain yet soft enough to provide me a comfortable nights sleep. Once I read what was causing that smell (if you've ever used a memory foam pillow or mattress, you know what I'm talking about), I immediately began searching for an alternative.

Your sheets, pillows, comforters, duvet covers, shams and other bedding aren't chemical-free either. Cotton is notoriously susceptible to a number of insect pests and plant diseases; in order to combat these, growers use a startling number of pesticides and fungicides on the crops, some even before the seeds are planted! Then the cotton fibers themselves are saturated with chemicals during processing. Sensitive skin, anyone?

I believe that old proverb that says 'Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; Teach a man to fish and he'll feed his family for a lifetime.'  So in the spirit of those wise words, I am striving to provide you with research that supports my beliefs that we must do all we can to live greener, healthier lives and lessen our impact on the environment.

I'm always trying to learn more and offer the great products I discover on my website, so keep checking back, and if you know of a product that fits well with our product line, drop me an email and let me know.

Harmony Bedding is constantly striving to bring you more organic and natural bedding products. Check back often for links to our favorite and most informative research sites, and look for new items on our web page such as all-natural laundry detergent and mattresses.
